Well hello! I know I don’t usually post during the week, but I’m on vacation, and I have a special post regarding a series of postcards made specifically for an online challenge from My Collage Lab If you’re visiting from my Instagram page, welcome and thank you.
First of all, this series is inspired by video published on one of my favourite artist’s YouTube channel - Jane Davies. In case you’re not already following Jane (and if not, what’s wrong with you?!) the link to this particular tutorial is Here
This post is not a tutorial, but I wanted to show you a few of the different layers that went into this project. Since this is a collage challenge, the layers of collage might not be immediately evident, and I wanted to show them in particular. But of course I forgot to photograph a few layers - I get quite caught up in the process!
First of all, I glued down some of my photocopied doodles onto a 9” x 12” piece of Strathmore mixed media paper. I also added a bit of black paint as shown.
Next I added some paint in some of my favourite colours. I pulled some of the paint up with a sheet of paper in order to make sure my initial layer still showed through.
Next I added some hand-painted tissue paper. The circles you see are already glued down. You can see the black marks sitting on top waiting to be glued. I used tissue from an old pattern.
And here the are, all glued down.
Next I brayered some lighter colour horizontally, and added some stamped patterns from my favourite stamp source for mixed media - Art Foamies
Here I’ve added some marks with my Molotow pen in Signal Red, as well as a few scraps of gelli print. I didn’t like the white edges on the gelli print so I blended in a bit of Neocolor II crayon.
At this point I cut the base into four equal 4.5” x 6” pieces. Although a postcard size is usually 4” x 6” I don’t like to waste paper and there is no real size restriction. As those of you who follow me know I often make postcards from bingo cards of various sizes, as well as square cards and even giant puzzle pieces.
After the cards were cut, I added some finishing touches and wound up with the following four cards.
Thank you so much for joining me today! I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the different layers that went into these cards.
