Colour Lovers’ Challenge - Part 2

Today I’m sharing the remaining half of the Colour Lovers’ Challenge from Jodi Ohl

The prompt for Day 16 was Sad

Day 17 was Candy, which I turned into a colour mixing exercise.  I think a certain round candy’s slogan is “Taste the Rainbow” but I have to say I prefer the other one where you eat the red ones last.  :)

Day 18 we were supposed to express Energy & Movement

And Day 19 was all about Ice Cream

Day 20 was Water / Ocean - I think there’s a storm brewing on my water!

Day 21 was Earth

Day 22 was Winter, and even though we rarely get snow here, I always associate snow with winter.

Day 23 was Analogous Colours - I chose Cadmium Red and Cadmium Orange, mixing Red/Orange with the two colours. And of course I threw in some black ink for contrast.

The next day (24) had me thinking of the holidays with the theme of Red and Green

Day 25 we were challenged to depict Excitement  and I ask the rhetorical question - what’s more exciting than Red and Teal (answer nothing).

For Day 26 the prompt was Favourite Colour - It has to be teal (with red).

Day 27 was about contrast.  I chose the high-contrast colours of cadmium chartreuse and fluorescent magenta (plus black and white).  Jody mentioned in her post that she also thinks of other types of contrast (thick lines versus thin, big shapes vs small, etc.) which I thought was a very interesting take on the theme.

Day 28’s prompt was apple / orange / pear / lemon.  Some people chose one or two of the colours - I chose all four and was surprised how much I liked the combination as these are not necessarily colours I would think of using together all at once.

Day 20 was Clouds / Sunset or Sunrise (I’ll take sunset any day thank you).

And last but certainly not least, day 30 was Artist’s Choice.  I’m sure you can guess my combination features teal, turquoise and red.  :)

Colour Lovers Challenge

Since September 15 I’ve been participating in the Colour Lovers’ Challenge from Jodi Ohl   Each day is another colour or colour combination, and the challenge runs until October 14.  I’ll post the first half of the challenge today, and the rest next week.

I’m working each day in my square art journal.

First up was Summer Vibes.  I chose a bright summer palette and thought this looked like a summer fair - do you see it too?  

Next up was teal and orange - right in my colour zone!

Day 3 was Cool - I chose Payne’s Grey as the basis for this one.

Day 4 was Black and White, and I made two pages.  I wasn’t very happy with my ikebana-themed page.

So I also did an abstract.

Day 5 we were asked to express Anger or Hurt.

Day 6 was Soft and Cuddly - ok… we are officially out of my comfort zone!  I thought I’d use soft colours, and I used a dry brush to try to represent ‘cuddly’?  

Day 7 was our favourite colour palette - phew!  Back in the zone.  Teal, turquoise and red.

Next on day 8 was Warm.

Day 9 was Autumn - timely.

Day 10 was Happiness, and instead of trying to think of “happy” colours, I painted the colours and shapes that make me happy.

Day 11 was Neutral - something I struggle with, but always admire when done well.

Day 12 was Vibrant

Day 13 was Spring

Day 14 was Forest / Mountains / Grass - I went a lot more literal than I usually do.

And day 15, where we’ll leave off for today was Flowers.

Special Project - Revisiting Old Work

This week, I’m sharing a special project that has been made for a local call to artists from the Esquimalt Community Arts Hub

The exhibit is titled reVisiting, and briefly, the call challenges us to revisit, rework and reimagine past works.

I have lots of candidates for this, and I have often been known to paint over old pieces that no longer inspire me, but that’s not the name of this game.  I decided to rework two pieces that were created at the same time (2019) that loosely went together at the time, in such a way that they could stand on their own, or be used as a diptych.  

These are the two pieces I chose to rework.  They were mixed media, mostly collage and were exhibited online for a show with the Federation of Canadian Artists Here

The titles were “The Forecast is Clear” and “A Day in the Life”.

And here are the reworked versions:

The size is 8” x 24” each, and they look great stacked together or side by side, although they each stand alone as well.  I love that you can still see many of the original shapes, marks and papers veiled beneath the new paint.  

I’ve decided to keep the titles to honour the original works.

Week in Review

As I mentioned last week, Monday was a holiday and I managed to finish a couple of paintings.

This first one is called Jardin Moderne.  It’s 24” square

 

The next one is called Rearview Mirror.  It’s 30” square

I carried on with my daily square collages:

I worked on a small journal.

And I did some doodling on chipboard.  I have some grey tone mixed media paper and I may do some more of these “on purpose” because I really like the black on grey.  I did some more gelli prints on black and the doodles are sitting on one of my latest papers.

Week in Review

I also carried on with the Index Card A Day challenge (ICAD).

I also made a couple more 2” collages.  I picked these two stamps because I liked the colours.  I decided to look up how DDE and the Queen got along and found reference to them having a very cordial relationship.  The article said she even sent him her favourite scone recipe.  Hmm... not sure about the fact check on that but you never know right?

I also played around with some gelli printing on black paper which I really thought turned out to be quite rich.  I found some nice thin black paper so it will be good for collage.  

 

That’s about it.  I finished my sketchbook for The Sketchbook Project but haven’t finished working out which photos I still need to take - I’ll post the end of the book next week.

Week in Review

This week I’ll start with my latest painting, titled “Celebration”.  It’s 20” square on cradled wood panel and will be presented in a black metal frame.  This one is truly mixed media as it includes collage, gelli prints, acrylic paint pens, graphite pencil and water soluable crayon in addition to acrylic paint. 

Next, let’s look at this week’s 100 day project cards.  

These exes are from a hand-carved stamp I made recently.

The comedy and tragedy masks are also hand carved by me.  

The background here is a mix of acrylic ink (the gold-coloured dots and lines) and water soluble crayons.

The shapes along the right side are another hand carved stamp.  

And this last card has a piece of personal ephemera.  I found some old wedding presents when I was going through my parents’ things and found this shipping label on one of them.  From my dad’s uncle and his wife.  All are long gone now.

Next let’s look at this week’s index cards from the ICAD challenge.

A little citrus sliced hand-carved stamp as well as the black marks below.

These “lanterns” are also my hand-carved stamps.

I’ll finish up with a couple of pictures of our local wildlife.  Young deer are prevalent right now.

And this goldfinch has been hanging out at our windows for a week now.

Baby quails out for a walk under supervision.

One Week in Review

Glad to be all caught up - this should be a shorter post!

Let’s start with a completed painting.  This beauty is 24” square on wrapped canvas - I can’t wait to frame it.

Now on to the latest index cards for the Index Card a Day challenge - this week, we passed the half way mark.

First up, card 29.  I used one of my new hand-cut bird masks I made recently.

July 1 was Canada Day, and I actually remembered to use a Canadian stamp this year.  :)

For card 32 I skipped the bingo number in favour of this beautiful postage stamp.  These are my rules to break after all!

Card 33 features one of the new hand carved stamps I made this week.

Card 34 was for July 4, and I also remembered to use a US stamp that day!  Also featuring another hand carved stamp.

And last one for this week - card 35.

Now I’ll catch up on the latest pieces for the 100 day project - we are getting really close to the end.  The reason I don’t have seven this week is because I got ahead of myself (again) and messed up the numbers.  The last day will be July 15.

This one features yet another simple hand carved stamp.

 

Here’s a spread for the Sketchbook Project.  Apparently I’ve moved away from COVID and onto adultery - haha! This book must be mailed by August 15 which is just around the corner.  I have 2 full spreads and 1 half spread left so no problem!

This one is an abstract that is the first page of the book.

I’ll sign off with one final 2” collage diptych.

Week in Review

This week was busy.

First off, I completed (and sold) a new painting.  The fourth in my Moderna series.  24” x 30” on canvas (and framed). 

I also found out one of my paintings was accepted into a show in Vancouver - this one’s on paper and only 5” x 7”.  The show will go live online soon, and then it will be the first in-person show whenever the gallery re-opens.

Next, here are the latest in the 100 day project.

I’m having a lot of fun with these - this week we’ve got to #20, or 20% finished the project which wraps up about half way through June.  I have confirmed with Tammy Garcia of Daisy Yellow that ICAD is happening again in 2020 so we’ll see how this overlap works out!

And my longish watercolour paper journal (which of course I am using acrylics on).

Last but not least I’ve started a one-page zine (made from a single sheet of paper).  I haven’t made one of these for ages but I saw someone making them on Instagram and thought I should get in on the fun.

Week in Review

This week I’m doing things in a different order - I’m publishing my week in review  before my Sunday Postcard Art piece, because I haven’t made one yet.

I’ve signed up for I Hanna’s DIY postcard swap  which I’ve participated in quite a few times over the years.  Always a fun event, and nice to see it continuing in these crazy times.  Some of these cards may be in my outgoing swap cards.
