Summer of Color 4 - final week - Raspberry, Tangerine & Lemon

This is the final week of the Summer of Color challenge sponsored by Kristin at Twinkle Twinkle Like a Star.  This has been a wonderful challenge, working with colour combinations familiar and not-so-familiar.  And the quality and variety of work produced by the participants each week has been consistently inspiring and exciting.  Thank you one and all - especially our gracious hostess!

This week's colours were a fruity mix - light and summery - Raspberry, Tangerine with a splash, smudge or pop of Lemon.  Here is my final card - and there will be an accordion book at some point, just not right now.  I have started to cut the pieces for it though, so hopefully in the next week or two!  Watch this space.  :)

I have to tell the story of how this card was almost a disaster...  I decided to use inks instead of paints because I didn't think I had quite the right colours.  So I found a distress ink and another dye ink for my two main colours, sticking with acrylic yellow for my lemon.  I put the ink on and there it sat wet - for hours.  I finally blotted it and fussed around until I had something dryish that looked like just the right colours.  I added my lady, who is looking a bit sad that this is the last week, painted on the sun and went to dinner and a movie with some friends.  When I came back, the tangerine colour had dried a dreadful dusty rose colour - yuck!  And the raspberry must not have been quite dry either becaue my yellow sun was now the colour that the tangerine was supposed to be!  NeoColorII to the rescue - I oranged up my dusty rose and I'm quite sure the colour is close enough now.  I added another layer of paint to the sun and love the ring the wet ink left around the edges - a happy accident.

Summer of Color - Red, Royal Blue & Light Blue

This week, Kristin has challenged us to work with another great group of colours - Royal Blue, Red and a smudge, splash or pop of Light Blue.  I've stuck with my altered bingo cards and will probably make them into some sort of book; whether I will tape them together accordion style or put a ring on them I have yet to decide.

My royal blue and light blue are easier to tell apart in person than in the scan!

Next week is our last week.  I can truly say that this has been a wonderful challenge with so many talented people producing amazing work each week in the most varied of mediums.  And it's been very inspiring to work with some familiar colour combinations and some that I wouldn't normally work with and find out THAT's OK!  :) Thank you Kristin for putting this all together - I know it is a lot of work and appreciate it so much, as I'm sure the other artists do as well.

 

Summer of Color 4 - Apple Green, Pink, Dark Green

What fun to work with these bright summery colours this week!  Kristin gave us the colours Apple Green, Pink and a smudge, splash or pop of dark green.  Keeping with my theme of altered bingo cards, this is what I came up with:

I used Green Gold acrylic for my apple green, and mixed Quinacridone Crimson with gesso for the pink.  The dark green is an Inktense stick.  Image is an oldie but a goodie from ARTchix Studio.  Can't wait to see what everyone else created this week! 

SOC 4 - Lavender, Grey, Plum

This week's colours for the Summer of Color 4 challenge are Lavender, Grey and a touch of Plum.

I was originally going to leave the centre of my flower plain (it is a rubber stamp), but at the last minute I thought I would make it plum.  Yikes it was too dark and too opaque so it looked like an actual plum had landed in the middle of my flower!  After being pleased with my card I now hated it and thought I ruined it.  Then I decided to try to salvage it with some white gel pen (which I then blotted so it wasn't so bright).  I'm back to being happy with my card, but it's probably a(nother) good lesson in knowing when to say "enough"! 

Summer of Color (SOC) 4 - Teal, Coral, Bright White

We are in the midst of week two of the Summer of Color.  This is my first time participating, but the fourth year of the challenge.  This week Kristin challenged us to make something with Teal, Coral and a bit of Bright White.  What fun! 

Thank you to those who visited last week and to those commented on whether or not you "make it work" or start over when faced with an artistic snag - I really enjoyed your comments.  I thought I should confess that I don't always just carry on and modify my plans.  A case in point:  I once made a lovely dress for New Year's Eve and when it was almost done I tried it on and it didn't fit.  I burnt it in the back yard burner.  Looking back I realize it was very wasteful and I should have donated it somewhere (or used the scraps in something mixed media!) but to my 20 year old self it was a disaster of epic proportions that could only be resolved by something dramatic! 

Speaking of dresses - when I heard that coral was one of the colours this week I wanted to use it in a dress because I have fond memories of another more successful sewing project where I made a coral dress to wear to a cousin's wedding.  That was a big colour in the 70's and I must have been in my early teens and felt very grown-up in it. 

Summer of Color (SOC) 4 - Yellow, Aqua, Hot Pink

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am very excited to be joining in the Summer of Color 4 challenge presented by the lovely and talented Kristin.

The first colour combination was Aqua Blue, Yellow and Hot Pink.  I decided to alter a bingo card (no surprise to those who follow this blog).  I glued down some papers and then added gesso.  I proceeded to add my yellow ochre and aqua (turquoise, teal and cyan) to the card and then stamped on three circles with Pink Azalea Radiant Rain.  These circles were to be turned into balloons.  I had this delightful image of a little girl holding out her hand which I would draw the "string" from the balloons so it looked like she was holding them.  So clever right?  Everything was ready - I gave her some hot pink accents on her socks and dress and ran her through my Xyron and...can you guess what happened next?  I ran out of adhesive and in trying to release her from the last of the adhesive her legs were separated from her body - unsalvageable. 

So - I just find another girl in my image stash right?  Well no one was the right size or pointing in the right direction, so I gave up on the balloons and added this lovely ballerina.  Perhaps she's also a juggler, I don't know! 

What do you do when art disaster strikes?  Make it work, or chuck it and start over?
